Petchitecture is the annual gala fundraiser for PAWS (Pets are Wonderful Support), a non-profit organization that provides programs and services to help keep people and pets together. The PAWS mission is to ensure that illness or age never separate people from the unconditional love of their pets. WDA supports this mission by creating pet habitats for auction at Petchitecture, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting PAWS.
Built using 100% salvaged/reclaimed materials including Cor-Ten steel and Western Red Cedar, re|treat is an elegant piece of modern living room furniture that doubles as a pet habitat for a cat or small dog.
The coffee table is framed by a metal surround cut from Cor-Ten steel panels reclaimed from the facade of a private residence in San Francisco’s SOMA district. The grain of the panels evokes that former life and brings visual interest to the surface of the piece.
On the inside of the surround, the metal was ground and polished to a high finish, to make a clean, safe home for pets. The contrast of the interior and exterior finishes highlights the rich color of the weathered side of the steel.
A dynamic pattern cut into reclaimed Western Red Cedar defines the enclosure for the pet, simulating a forest or lattice that creates privacy and encourages play. Sourced from old growth boomsticks (or piers) in Shoemaker Bay off of Vancouver Island, BC, the clear vertical grain Cedar 2X8s were joined into panels before being cut into the finished pattern.
The hand-made fabric cushion brings color and a playful spirit to the enclosure that is also the perfect place to store pet toys and treats.
