What does it mean to disconnect truly?
For William Duff Architects, The Battery began as an exploration of how architecture can reconnect people to landscape, light, climate and stillness through small-scale hospitality design.
Recently recognized with a Merit Award in the SHLTR competition, the conceptual micro-cabin retreat reimagines the modern getaway as an immersive experience rooted in wellness, flexibility, and environmental sensitivity. A lightweight steel structure, retractable roof, and expansive openings dissolve the line between shelter and nature, allowing guests to experience the surrounding forest as an extension of the living space itself.

Designed as part of a larger retreat community featuring wellness, gathering, and recreation spaces, The Battery reflects WDA’s broader approach to hospitality design: creating spaces that feel intentional, restorative, and deeply connected to place.
Led by Hospitality Studio Leader Patrick Kruger with design team Allison Foronda, Richard Klaja, Dustin Foster, and Franklin Stier. Congratulations team!
